Matt Beckett & Paul Beckett receive the award from New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark

Bay of Plenty Exporter of the Year Awards 2002

The total enthusiasm for his invention is one of the reasons that Paul Beckett and his family have made a huge success of blokart - a lightweight, wind-powered vehicle that packs away into a bag for traveling.

And it is that enthusiasm and his ongoing plans to have blokart take the world by storm that impressed the judges of the Exporter of the Year Awards.

The team from blokart at the Mount won the United Travel New Exporter of the Year Award and the trophy sits proudly on the glass-topped coffee table in the company's bright new premises at 111 Newton St, Mt Maunganui.

And with the demand for blokarts and Paul and his team's enthusiasm... more awards for innovation and progressive thinking are likely to come the way of the team at blokart.

International jury of the ispo DuPont BrandNew Awards Summer 2001 chooses blokart landsailer as the Summer Hardware winner at ispo 21-24 July 2001.

More than 100 entries from all over the world reached the jury of the ispo DuPont BrandNew Awards Summer 2001. The large number of competitors and the variety of products from different fields, the likes of which had never been seen before, did not make it easy for the nine jurors from industry and media to select the winners in the categories Summer Hardware, Sportswear, Sportswear Accessories and Others.

The ispo DuPont BrandNew Awards are for young, innovative, imaginative, future-oriented and usable brands and products in the sports sector. The winners of the various categories benefit from a free stand at ispo, the world's largest trade fair for sports equipment and fashion in Munich, as well as marketing support and an invaluable media presence, which helps the young companies to launch their new products onto the market.

The winner of the "Summer Hardware" category was the New Zealand product "blokart", a cross between a land sailer and a go-kart. It is made of steel and fibreglass, is extremely durable, safe and light, simple to use and uncomplicated to transport. With a total weight of only 25kg, the entire piece of sports equipment with mast and sail is easily stored or transported and can be assembled in just few minutes. On the beach or cordoned-off grounds, the "blokart" can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h.

"The blokart is compact and perfect in every detail. It is almost unbelievable that you can reach speeds of up to 90 km/h with nothing but wind power", says jury member Benjamin de Diesbach, Promostyl Paris. The six winners as well as the other 36 finalists of the ispo DuPont BrandNew competition for young entrepreneurs, selected by the jury from the many applicants, will be presented to the international public in Hall A1 at ispo 2001 Summer on the Munich trade fair grounds from July 21st to 24th 2001.

Innovation Award Winner at Soltex, Manchester Trade Fair 2001

The new blokart, a portable, wind powered go-kart designed in New Zealand, took first place in the Innovations Awards at Soltex, the trade's outdoor sports exhibition at G-Mex, Manchester (Feb 25th - 28th 2001).

Voted top in the Outdoor Leisure category by industry insiders, the blokart is set to ignite a new sport of blokart sailing in the UK, hot on the heels of its success in New Zealand where it was conceived.

After voting by exhibitors and visitors at the all-trade show, David Neilson from blokart in New Zealand, received the award from Lesley Beck, of the show organisers Rare Event Management.

"This is the first time we have exhibited the blokart in the UK," said Neilson, "and we've had a great response from everyone who has seen it, from all ages and lifestyles".

Asked what he felt were the key factors to the blokart's award success, Neilson said, "Without doubt, it is the blokart's wide appeal. Our message is that the blokart is easy to transport, quick to set up, easy to use and fun for all - people can see this from our video clips and voted accordingly. blokart sailing really is an all-inclusive sport".
