The original Sand Yachting clubs used to meet here and the last speed record was held for a long time. Unfortunately, the council decided to let it return to it's natural state and over the years sand grass and small shrubs have covered the surface. Just recently we have been allowed to use it again. The terrain is bumpy and firm, but still fun. Small wasps tend to live in the sand grass during summer, so a pod is advised!

Concrete Pad On Belle Isle Detroit Near Casino

If you watch the Detroit Gran Prix race, this is the concrete pad which is used for the pit area. It is in the State Park and you don't need permission. There is a charge for the park in certain times of the year. You can buy an annual pass for 10 bucks. Very smooth concrete and nice grassy areas to put sails up. Well patrolled by police so very safe. Keep right when you enter the island and you will see the large concrete parking lot to your left in front of the casino. It is right across from the checkered pavement for the starting line of the race. Great wind on most days due to good exposure. Island is in middle of Detroit River.

The dry lake of Ivanpah, 40 minutes from Las Vegas, is one of the best 'natural' sailing sites in North America. It is an area appox 3 miles by 7 miles and has some sensitive habitat issues at certain times of the year so be sure to check this out first.
The site doesn't get rain. With so much heat coming of the dry lake bed, most rain never hits the ground.

Ivannpah has a very fine dust, almost like baby powder which gets everywhere and in every thing. You may want to use a face mask when the wind is up. The winds rip through pretty good at times and dust devil swirls pop up from time to time.

A large group of Detroit area Blokart owners are sailing at this location just about every decent weather weekend in the fall and spring! It is the most popular blokart sailing site in MI. Spring and Fall are the best times to sail, 7 days a week. The parking lot will have less than 25 cars in the entire area after labor day weekend thru the winter right up until late Spring (May). Winter sailing is good as well when the snow is minimal. The park officials (police, etc) love blokart's and are very friendly. There is only one request, that sailors are careful and stay well clear of cars, especially when crossing the center of the lot where cars typically travel en route to the clubhouse area. Summer sailing is possible but the high traffic can limit your sailing area to the N end of the lot.

Considered by some the best Blokart Venue in North America, although the claim is disputed by those who have yet to sail Raco.
The venue is 3 miles or 5K per lap rumline. Runways are 100 meters wide.
Raco is an Abandoned U.S. Air Force base off of M-28 just past the small town of Raco. Great Lakes BloKart club has permission from the U.S. forest Service to sail the base. bring Tire slim as there are still little metal wire things that can give you a slow leak. Great Lakes BloKart club has made a magnetic sweeper to clean up the runways (we need help). Winds are steady temps can be cool, pavement is smooth, some weed growth between seems.
Bring a 5.5, 4m, 3m and maybe a 2m sail.
The wind doesn't move up and down a lot like on the dry lake beds out west. ie... if it is blowing 12 to 15 knots, it will blow 12 to 15 for hours if not all day.
Great for camping by tent or RV at Raco. Willabee's Hotel in nearby Brimley, MI. very friendly to Blokart sailors, make sure to tell Rick at the Hotel your a blokart sailor, he has been known to give discounts on rooms for groups of blokart sailors. The dinner next to the Hotel has good food at cheap prices.
Locals are friendly. Raco has hiking trails and camping.
During WWII Raco was a POW camp which held German POW's who were captured in North Africa.
Later the base was built up to fly sorties and shoot missiles against the U.S.S.R.
